Last…

A list of pre-departure lasts…
- Last must-do-before-sea job. The main has recently had a tendency to get stuck up in the air. Not so bad when one can curse very loudly and dash behind a nearby headland to sweet talk it back onto the boom. Cursing loudly I can do at sea, but the nearest headland will be several thousand miles on. So I changed-out the metal shackles that attach the cringles to their cars, they are the culprits, with nylon webbing. The supplies for this were a gift from a rigger in Mexico. I’ve been slow, too slow, to get to this job.
- Last tropical waterfall visible from the anchorage. Mt Waialeale was positively gushing today.
- Last glory shot of Murre anchored in a tropical paradise.
- Last row ashore to a long, lovely sandy beach.
- Last shower in a public place under a cold-water tap. The Hawaiians I asked to take my picture were not amused. Thought me a bit queer for asking. Almost got a black eye out of the deal. The tight shorty-shorts I was wearing, so usual in Tahiti, may have had something to do with it. In Hawaii all dudes wear swim trunks that go down to their knees, always; even if their dates are wearing thongs, which THEY usually are.
- Last multi-million dollar beach home surrounded by palm trees.
- Last shirtless schlep into town for supplies.
- Last missionary chruch. On the mainland everyone has always been Christian.
- Last field of taro.
- Last shop selling Kauai kitch–waves, sunsets, giggling dolphins painted on black velvet. No Elvis. He never was much for yoga.
- Last purchase of extra-yummy taro mochi cake … except the stand was closed. Drat! Taro mochi cake is one of the seven wonders of the world. It even rivals chocolate chip cookies–which is something.
- Last fish tacos from Tropical Taco.
- Last Zebra Dove. Where we are going the grizzly bears would have gobbled up these little fuzzies as snacks centuries ago.
- Last Fire Rock. Cooked in Kona, a damn fine brew.
- Last LeBron.
- Last chance to chat with Dylan, a fellow cruiser, Pacific Ocean veteran, and a man of exuberance beyond measure. He also seems never to wear a shirt. Admirable. Now he owns a fine shop that sells authentic Polynesian artifacts. Except he spends Sundays with his family and was not available for a good bye. If you are ever in Hanalei, stop here. His inventory comes from island artisans who are distributed all over the tropical Pacific.
- Last chance to buy fresh, organic veg. Sadly everything in Hawaii is refrigerated, so it won’t last long on my mostly unrefrigerated boat. Eat often, eat fast.
- Last tropical sunset from a lovely anchorage.
- And where are we headed? Well, the weather will decide that, but our goal is here. This is Baranof Island in 57 degrees north latitude, home to the town of Sitka, Alaska. 2800 miles onward, more or less.
And lastly, LAST photos posted to this blog for a month!
Bon Voyage!
